Steve Holeman Award

The purpose is t o acknowledge the accomplishments of Directors of educational equity programs who have demonstrated continuing dedication to the cause of educational excellence and equity, concern for the development of their students' potential, and professionalism in the administration of their program(s). This award is named for Steve Holeman, former Upward Bound Director, Occidental College in Los Angeles, who exemplified these qualities during his years as Director.

NOMINATION CRITERIA:

  1. Has been or is currently a Director of one of the following programs: Upward Bound, Upward Bound Math/Science, Educational Talent Search, Student Support Services, Veteran's Upward Bound, Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program, or Educational Opportunity Centers. Directors of other equity programs of similar scope and intent may be considered.
  2. Has excelled in his/her job as a Director of Educational Equity programs, shown concern for the development of his/her students' potential, and has shown dedication to the ideals of excellence in education.
  3. Is a current WESTOP member.

Friend of WESTOP Award

The purpose of this award is to acknowledge the support given to WESTOP through the years by individuals who share the association's belief in excellence and equality in education.

NOMINATION CRITERIA:

  1. Has made significant contributions to WESTOP in personal, financial, moral, political, or ideological terms above and beyond the requirements of her/his job.
  2. Is not a member of the WESTOP Board of Directors at the time of either the nomination or presentation of the award.

WESTOP Achiever

The purpose of this honor is to acknowledge the accomplishments of educational equity students who have completed their baccalaureate degree, entered professional fields, and whose community or professional activities have served their fellow humans and are focused on the improvement of society.

NOMINATION CRITERIA:

  1. Is a former educational equity program participant.
  2. Has completed a postsecondary program resulting in a baccalaureate/terminal degree.
  3. Has demonstrated significant civic, community, or professional contributions.
  4. Has made outstanding achievements within his/her profession as indicated through specific activities, contributions, and/or recognition of achievement in that profession.

Staff of the Year

The purpose of this award is to acknowledge the accomplishments of a staff member from educational equity programs who has demonstrated continuing dedication to ensure educational equity, concern for the development of his/her students' potential, and professionalism in implementing services or activities in his/her program and community. This award recognizes an educational equity program staff member whose commitment, perseverance, and contributions go "above and beyond" the expected towards the success of his/her students and respective program(s).

NOMINATION CRITERIA: (Only 1 nominee)

  1. Has been, or is currently, a staff member of one of the following programs:  Upward Bound, Upward Bound Math/Science, Educational Talent Search, Student Support Services, Veteran’s Upward Bound, Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program, Educational Opportunity Centers, or other similar educational equity programs. NOTE:  "Staff" is defined as a non-Director position such as Assistant Director, Coordinator, Educational Specialist, Administrative Assistant, Secretary, Instructor, Counselor, Residential Manager, Tutor, Teaching Assistant, etc.
  2. Has been working with educational equity programs for at least 10 years.
  3. Has excelled in his/her position, shown concern for the development of his/her students' potential, and dedication to the ideals of excellence in education.
  4. Is a WESTOP member.

Service Awards

In recognition of the length of service by a Director and/or Staff member from an educational equity program.  This award is presented in celebration of WESTOP's 29 years of contributions toward educational excellence and equity for students through its membership.

NOMINATION CRITERIA:

  1. Has been or is currently a Director or Staff member of one of the following programs:  Upward Bound, Upward Bound Math/ Science, Educational Talent Search, Student Support Services, Veteran's Upward Bound, Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program, Educational Opportunity Centers, or other similar Educational Equity Programs. NOTE:  "Staff" is defined as a non-Director position such as Assistant Director, Coordinator, Educational Specialist, Administrative Assistant, Secretary, Instructor, Counselor, Residential Manager, Tutor, Teaching Assistant, etc.
  2. Has been working with Educational Equity Program(s) for a minimum of 10 years.
  3. Is a current WESTOP member (you may nominate yourself).

Peggy Whitehead Scholarship

Mrs. Peggy J. Whitehead began her career with the US Department of Education in 1984.  For the next 37 seven years, she worked tirelessly for the good of TRiO students until her retirement in 2001.  To recognize and honor Peggy's commitment and dedication to TRiO students, The Western Association of Educational Opportunity Personnel (WESTOP) has created the Peggy J. Whitehead Scholarship Fund.  This fund was created to assist high school TRiO students with their educational pursuit.

Commemorating this award, the recipient will be recognized at the 30th Annual WESTOP Conference in Waikoloa, Hawaii.  The $1,000 scholarship will be awarded upon verification of enrollment for the Fall of 2008 in an accredited college or university.  The scholarship is available on a competitive basis to high school students, who are nominated by a current WESTOP member.  This year’s recipient will be from the Pacific Islands Chapter.
