Monterey Bay Recognized as a National Model

CSUMB's Upward Bound (UB), a program designed to increase the number of low-income and potential first-generation college bound students from Watsonville High School that complete high school and continue to pursue a university degree, was recognized by the TRIO community for the innovative integration of technology.   UB is a federally funded program through the TRIO branch of the U.S. Department of Education.   UB integrated technology into the program by helping students learn how to use multi-media to create digital stories.   The model is an adaptation of the digital stories CSUMB students through HCOM courses.   Read the full story.

UBers Go Photo UCR Upward Bound Students were recently included in a museum exhibition sponsored on by the UCR/California Museum of Photography.   In cooperation with UCR, Upward Bound students were invited to participate in a rephotographic project of selected historic sites in downtown Riverside. GEAR Up at UC's Newest Campus The UC Merced's GEAR UP program hosted a 4-week summer program at CSU, Stanislaus, where 48 rising eighth graders had that opportunity to enrich their math and science skills.   The program was known as PREP/GEAR UP, and it was the first time such a program had been offered. West Hills Summer Jam On June 27, 2003, West Hills Community College hosted the Third Annual Summer Jam event involving eight federally funded programs.   We had three California State Universities and three Community Colleges participating in this yearly event.   We had CSU Cal Poly, CSU Fresno State, CSU Monterey, Fresno City Community College, Reedley College, and West Hills College. SUCCESS at UOP SUCCESS is a Student Support Services.   It provides support services for 200 students to aid in their retention and graduation from the University of the Pacific. Students are encouraged to pursue graduate or professional degrees. Read the full story.

Fresno City College Jobs and Empowerment Fresno City College's 2003 Upward Bound Summer Job Shadow advanced four-fold from the preceding summer's launch of this relatively new program component.   The summer 2002 effort showed solid substantiation for motivating our UB students to get their four-year college degree by "shadowing" a professional. Stanislaus SSS The Peer Advisors made the Student Support Services Program, Student Affairs Division, and California State University Stanislaus proud as they sat as panelists at the Fifth Annual Latino Education Conference held in Las Vegas, Nevada. "The Latino School Dropout Dilemma: An Agenda for Action" was the conference's theme. Read the full story.
