- The Cencal Chapter will facilitate and provide educational enrichment activities, leadership training, communication, collaboration, and legislative awareness for both its members and student populations that are served within its respective membership.
- Chapter Updates:
- Current membership status as of December 7th stands at 72 PAID memberships with (4) pending individual memberships.* as reported by membership chair Michelle McKelvey via email attachment. This was verified prior to the most recent chapter meeting conducted on December 7th, 2007.
- Chapter members have been given weekly communication regarding membership deadlines, Kona registration, and legislative updates via the listserv by the chapter president. Communication has had a positive effect as it has allowed the membership to keep up to date with new and departing members of the chapter.
- Since the last board meeting the following activities have taken place: Student Leadership Conference/TRiO Day event was hosted at CSU, Fresno on October 19-20th for 200+ attendees (UB, ETS, SSS, and EOC). The two day over-night event entailed workshops, a scholarship awards banquet, and a press conference with Congressman Jim Costa and Fresno State President Jim Welty. The event culminated with the students marching into Bulldog Stadium in a sea of “I am TRIO” burgundy T-shirts that gave visibility to the TRiO community. The event also received coverage on a local Spanish television station. The students were treated to the Fresno State vs. San Jose State football game which proved exciting as this was the first time most students had witness to a Division I football game up close and personal. The Student Leadership chair/co-chair (Mr. Agni Fernandez/Lily Robles) were very instrumental in obtaining several sponsors for the SLC/TRiO day event to the tune of over $12,000 and has secured committed donations for next year’s event. The event netted profit for the chapter. Both Mr. Fernandez and Ms. Robles have been nominated by the chapter president to work with Brian Aquilar in soliciting ideas/funds for WESTOP related activities.
- The annual Professional Development Conference was recently held December 6-7 at West Hills Lemoore campus with 39 attendees. The newly refined “New Members” presentation was used for the new member’s reception and was met with positive reviews. The silent auction raised over $ 750 going toward student scholarships. The membership was hosted with true hospitality by the West Hills administration and were welcomed to the newest Junior College campus in the state of California. Congressman Dean Flores had committed to be a key note speaker, but due to weather conditions, he was unable to attend the event as planned.
- Scholarships have been awarded to (8) students from within the respective programs represented in the chapter. SSS received (2), ETS received (4), and UB received (2). The membership just recently voted to increase the scholarship fund for next year as our fundraising efforts during our chapter meetings have had great success. These efforts come from our marble game and raffle items that each program provides at each meeting.
- The Summer Jam final budget report reflected that the chapter netted $1,895.00 in profit from the event back in June 2007. This was reported by Rey Cuesta.
- Most recent chapter meeting was productive with nominations coming forth for By-laws chair, leg/ed, Summer Jam, SLC, TRiO Day, and Scholarships. The next chapter meeting has been scheduled for February 8th, 2008 at CSU, Bakersfield at which time, voting will take place for these positions.
- A call went out for volunteers for policy seminar coming up in March and has been communicated via the listserv. A recent reminder went out this past Wednesday to the membership for someone to respond by the January 11th deadline. Volunteers were asked to email the President if they were interested sometime this coming week.
- Chapter treasury balance as of December 7th: $21, 910.49.
