May 11, 2007
Tempe, AZ.

Executive Board
Past President: Michelle McKelvey
President: Silvester Mata
President Elect: Hector Acosta
Treasurer: Daniel Pacheco
Secretary: Wendy Adams

Chapter Description: The purpose of the Arizona Chapter is to bring together WESTOP Members on a geographical basis to articulate and act upon issues and concerns of their membership within the purpose, objectives, and functions of WESTOP as expressed in Article II, Sections 2.1 and 2.2 (Article III, Section 3.2)

Chapter Updates
Election of Executive Board

  • Will act in a similar fashion to the Executive Board of WESTOP (discuss policies, tactics and address issues).
  • Executive Board will include all three presidents (past, present, elect), treasurer, and secretary.
  • A new strategy the association is using is by including the past president role. This tactic has been changed to encourage to others to run for office but also to recognize the hard work of others.

COE Policy Seminar

  • Chapter was represented by 5 members.
  • All members were able to meet with various reps.
  • Plans and strategies were discussed to encourage more members to attend COE Policy Seminar.

Professional Development Seminar

  • The Professional Development Seminar was held on the campus of Arizona State University on April 26-28th.
  • Marked the first time in a long time that the PDS was held on a host campus of TRiO Program. In this case, the host university was Arizona State University and the TRiO Program was the Upward Bound Program located at Arizona State University.
  • The strategy for the PDS to be held at a host university was to cut down on expenses and increase revenue. Because it was held a host university, the only expense that occurred was a $100 expense for food. The AZ chapter is rethinking its PDS strategy in light of the WESTOP Budget Crisis.
  • The PDS lasted 3 days with a newcomer’s reception on the first evening where newcomers to TRiO were given a “history lesson” on WESTOP and the AZ Chapter. Newcomers were also given the chance to express their thoughts on working for a TRiO program and also their concerns.
  • Workshops took place on the 2nd day and the PDS ended with a chapter meeting on the 3rd day.
  • The focus of this year's PDS was to develop strategies, ideas and goals for the AZ Chapter for this current year and for future years. With that in mind, three workshops were offered: “Restructuring the AZ Pipeline”, “Advocacy”, and also “Planning for the AZ Chapter”.
  • Each workshop began with successful tactics for each subject and then discussions on how it relates to the AZ Chapter followed.
  • To fully gauge member’s thoughts on the AZ Chapter, a survey was created and distributed to AZ members. The results of this chapter survey allowed members to speak and voice their concerns although they may not have been present.

Conversations in regards to WESTOP Budget

  • A call for comments was sent out to the AZ members in regards to the “WESTOP Budget Crisis”. These thoughts have been recorded and will be brought to the attention of the Board of Directors.
