Committee Description: 
The Legislation and Education Committee shall inform the membership and the Board on relevant issues and mobilize efforts to proactively respond to regional and national legislative and educational issues.

Committee Activities:

1. Assembling follow-up association wide monthly web newsletter “The Leg/Ed Know-It-All” for the end of September to address multiple issues including:
1. Immigration legislation follow-up: what happens next?
2. New UB/UBMS/VUB grant competition: responding to the proposed changes/priorities, the grant application draft, communicating our opinions to congress, and how programs can respond.
3. Any other pertinent leg/ed news concerning new legislation, state initiatives, and the calendar year           

2. Following up with Communications committee to develop informational brochures and reference guides to TRIO programs in the region (by chapter, by program type, state, and region) (proposed to complete by September 30).
3. Revise and update WESTOP Blueprint for Action (end of August) with Communications committee.
4. Identifying material and reference resources for assembly of region wide advocacy program to include local action plans and how-to guides, along with calendar of action (end of September) to be rolled out during Fall/Winter at regional PDS events.
5. Continuing outreach with Sen. Boxer’s office (w/ Ken Songco) to inform of proposed priorities and grant application changes.
6. Continuing mock-up work of state policy seminar model (determining requirements, surveying interested parties, identifying goals, etc.)
7. Making contact with leg/ed committees in fellow regional associations to learn and exchange information, strategies, etc., regarding the new challenges to TRIO.
8. Planning and assembling scholarship award committee to be in charge of administering WESTOP wide scholarship approved in May (formal offering by August 30).
