Chapter Description:
Provide leadership that will facilitate a communication network within Nevada by holding chapter meetings, providing activities that will advance educational equity and act upon issues and concerns of our membership. Prepare and submit the annual budget and chapter reports at WESTOP board meetings as well as serve on WESTOP Board committees.
Chapter Updates:
- Our last chapter meeting was held on May 31, 2006 at the University of Nevada, Reno campus. During the meeting 2006-07 goals for the chapter were discussed. There was also a discussion about the proposed increase of WESTOP membership fees.
- The 2nd Annual TRIO Graduation Celebration in the northern Nevada area was held on May 3 at the University of Nevada, Reno and it was well attended. Various campus administrators, family members and friends of the TRIO Upward Bound, Student Support Services and McNair Scholars programs along with representatives from the offices of Senator Harry Reid, Senator John Ensign and Senator Jim Gibbons were present to see this year’s graduates recognized and honored.
- The NV chapter PDS committee indicated that it will not be able to coordinate a seminar for the fall, but will plan a student leadership conference that will be held around the same time as TRIO Day in February 2007. Our members will be encouraged to attend the PDS sponsored by the WESTOP chapters in California. Information was sent to members regarding the NorCal and SoCal PDS fall seminars.
- Even though we did not reach our fair share goal for 2005-06, the chapter president did encourage members to respond to the call to raise our May 1st percentage of 56%. With the help of the southern NV area we were able to reach at least 73% of our goal by the end of June.
- Our 2006-07 Nevada chapter treasurer, Leonard Woods, accepted a position at the University of Hawaii at Hilo. The Nevada chapter is highly grateful for the many years Leonard has served Nevada in various positions. Even though he will remain in the WESTOP region, he will be missed in Nevada.
- Next chapter meeting will be held in early October 2006.
Action Items:
- Treasurer duties were added to the chapter secretary’s position. Ellen
Murphy agreed to accept the additional responsibilities to carry us
through the remaining 2006-07 year.
